For Rocky Sandoval, a song begins with an emotion, but its story does not have to end with the recording. The Tacoma R&B artist is thinking about how music, images and live performance can work together as he develops the next chapter of his independent career.

In written responses supplied to Variety Press, Sandoval describes a growing interest in cinematic storytelling. He wants a visual to carry the same emotional weight as a lyric, giving listeners another way into the experiences behind his songs.

“I want visuals to feel like scenes from a film instead of just performance clips,” he says.

Building a world around the music

Emotion, tension, nostalgia and human conflict are among the themes Sandoval identifies as influences on his recent visual direction. For him, a cohesive project connects those ideas across its music and presentation. A cover image can introduce a mood; a video or live performance can develop it further.

That approach reflects his interest in projects that feel intentional from beginning to end. Rather than treating each creative decision as an isolated promotional step, he sees the different parts as ways of telling a connected story.

“I’m especially excited about creating projects that feel cohesive from beginning to end,” Sandoval explains. “I want listeners to step into a universe when they experience my music.”

Vulnerability at the center

The visual ambitions are rooted in the same emotional questions that shape his songwriting. Sandoval points to accountability, reflection and growth as recurring concerns in his work. He describes “ITS MY FAULT” as an example of writing that allows listeners to recognize their own regrets and attempts to move forward.

In his view, confidence does not require a flawless image. It can come from admitting a mistake or acknowledging that change is still in progress. That perspective gives his songs room to explore uncertainty alongside determination.

His interest in the emotional patience of 1990s R&B also informs that outlook. Sandoval values records that allow a feeling to develop through storytelling, vocal conviction and detail. He sees space for those qualities within contemporary R&B, even as listening habits and promotional cycles move quickly.

From Tacoma to the stage

Sandoval connects his persistence to growing up in Tacoma and creating in the Pacific Northwest. Building outside the largest music industry centers, he says, taught him to work with the resources available and develop his own foundation.

After more than two decades in music, he places particular importance on the connection that happens in front of an audience. A recording can introduce a voice; a performance lets people experience the energy and commitment behind it.

“Streaming can show people the music, but live performance shows people the soul behind it,” he says.

That relationship between recorded emotion and a shared live experience is central to the direction he describes. As Sandoval looks ahead, he wants the music, visuals and performances to feel like parts of the same artistic conversation—one grounded in lived experience and sustained by direct connections with listeners.
